Politics after the break.

So, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the South Korean minister of defence admitted that there is a plan in place to assassinate Kim Jong un in case of an emergency situation. Now, I’m not saying that this is exactly surprising, but to me, that seems like an extremely reckless political decision. I mean, the country appears to be nuclear capable, and you’re admitting that you have a plan to assassinate its leader? Couldn’t that potentially lead to huge backlash?

Imagine for a second that the United States admitted that they had a plan to assassinate Putin (which they most likely do, along with many other political figureheads, but hey, that’s just America). Could you imagine what kind of hostile situations that could lead to? I just can’t imagine why they would do this. Anyone else have any input?

North Korea is trapped in a corner, and they know it. They won’t do anything.

Every major power has all kinds of scenarios carefully laid out if the time calls for any such plan. It’s like when someone at a party talks about porn for some reason, and everyone else acts offended or uncomfortable, even though they all also watch porn.

I see two things here.

South Korea is stupid for coming out and saying this publicly. There’s almost no denying that.

Also, shit like this is why I hate CNN and Fox News. They don’t give a fuck who could possibly get killed if it means there is a story to break. Just my opinion though.

To be fair, it was announced during a public parliamentary session and other outlets are reporting on it as well. But I agree on the fact that South Korea is stupid for doing it, openly admitting it seems bad because it also publicly raises the question of “okay, they admitted they have plans to kill one world leader, what about others?” I mean, keeping it to the shadows seems a bit more politically safe?

Ah I see. I do agree they should have kept that under wraps.

The North’s nukes aren’t a problem for the South, the ungodly amount of artillery is. Nukes can be shot down, high explosive shells not so and as a result the North could effectively flatten Seoul within an hour. Those two countries are truly stuck in a phase of Mutually Assured Destruction.

Pretty much. Also, a nuke could be smuggled in, so it’s not completely discounted as a threat.

Wait why the hell would they publicly say that.

I’m not sure I entirely agree. The troubling thing about North Korea is that it’s built around a cult of personality and run by a family of successive psychopaths.

I’ve always sort of worried what happens if someone like Kim gets lung cancer or something. I mean, it isn’t like there’s much concern for the wellbeing of North Koreans generally, so what is the threat of nuclear annihilation to someone like that if they’re going to die anyway?

It’s not like Iran where you have a fully functioning a multilayered government with people who have a vested interest in not being nuked in retaliation. With North Korea, you’re basically banking on there being a Vasili Arkhipov type who refuses to press the button.

It’s not like admitting it is going to do anything, after all assassination attempts have been planned and executed before. Keeping it under wraps is kind of moot

Shooting down a nuclear warhead (especially from a high ballistic arc) is much more difficult than a Defense Contractor would have you believe. Especially when the missile being fired is a poor construction, which means it will break-up on reentry and cause all kinds of targeting nightmares for the ABM system operators.

Technically the Korean War never ended. We’re currently in a cease-fire with North Korea that’s been going on for decades. If North Korea had any plans of attacking us, they would have fired shots at our troops on the border by now.

And should they fire a nuke at another country, that will be the end of North Korea. The US, Russia, Great Britain, France, all the world’s superpowers will retaliate. Kim Jong Un knows this.

I don’t think it is a bad idea. North Korea is in a unique situation politically and cutting the head off the snake at the right time would likely let cooler heads prevail (or simply give up and ask for asylum).

True, but that’s kind of my point. North Korea is scary because the thing stopping them from launching nukes is one guy caring about the rest of the world retaliating.

And North Korea fires shots across the border a lot . https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_border_incidents_involving_North_Korea

We need to convince China to turn a blind eye on NK before the Tokyo olympics. That’s their most fruitful target.

It would either have to be a very small/low-yield nuke or an idiotic government. Anyone ever heard of this cool thing called radioactive fallout?
